ASTM A554: The Complete Guide to Welded Stainless Steel Tubing for Mechanical, Ornamental & Structural Use
Everything distributors need to know about ASTM A554 — the specification covering welded stainless steel tubing for mechanical, ornamental, and structural applications, and a majority of what Kingmaker Steel stocks and sells.
What Is ASTM A554?
ASTM A554 is the standard specification for welded stainless steel tubing intended for mechanical, ornamental, and structural applications. It covers austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic stainless steel tubing. If you are buying or selling stainless steel tubing for anything other than pressure service, A554 is almost certainly the specification you need.
What A554 Covers
A554 tubing is produced by continuous welding of flat-rolled stainless steel strip. The specification covers three shapes:
- Round — Specified by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness
- Square — Specified by outside dimension and wall thickness
- Rectangle — Specified by outside dimensions and wall thickness
Tubing is available in a range of grades, finishes, and sizes. The most commonly stocked grades are 304/304L and 316/316L.
Mechanical, Ornamental & Structural vs. Pressure Tubing
A554 covers tubing for mechanical, ornamental, and structural use — it is not intended for pressure-containing applications. For pressure service, specifications like A269, A270, or A312 apply. The key difference is that A554 does not require hydrostatic testing or nondestructive examination (NDE) of the weld seam. This makes A554 tubing more economical and more readily available.
Common Applications
A554 tubing is used across a wide range of industries and applications:
- Architectural railings and handrails (ornamental)
- Furniture and fixtures (ornamental)
- Automotive trim and exhaust components (mechanical)
- Food and beverage equipment framing (structural)
- Industrial fabrication and structural supports (structural)
- Marine hardware and boat railings (ornamental/structural)
- Data center cooling system components (mechanical/structural)
- Energy infrastructure supports (structural)
